Getting Started Making Jewelry
I began my adventures in beading when I was about 8 years old. At first jewelry-making was difficult. I had no one to teach me and was left to my own devices. My bracelets came out too small or too big. Necklaces would pop and send beads flying all over the place (results of using a square knot to finish a piece). Loops where lop-sided, pieces of wire stuck out. I wondered if there would ever come a day when I would be able to make beautiful flawless pieces. At times I would become frustrated, but I never stopped. As I grew older I learned the importance of research. Little by little, I gathered information. I spent hours on beading websites. I would write down notes and try new techniques. I invested in tools and better materials (which really do make a difference). I subscribed to beading magazines and read the most recommended books; but most importantly, I kept making jewelry. Lots of it. Practice makes perfect.
I started giving my handmade jewelry to friends and family. Once I was able to make more professional jewelry, I started selling. It has been a truly rewarding experience, to learn how to make something. Here you will find a few articles and tips for beginning this long and (happily) arduous journey.
